Ocean, here we come!

Jessica says:

Well, we are in Cape Canaveral this Monday morning. So far, it has been an uneventful trip for us. We stayed in the Seville on the Plaza Saturday night, and saw what appeared to be a limo convention at the QuikTrip next to the hotel. Turns out that Prom was just down the street. As an interesting side note, Elvis was driving one of the limos. How would you like to go to Prom with Elvis as your driver?

Following a brunch with family, we flew from Kansas City to Orlando. Southwest Airlines gained two very loyal customers on that flight. Wes and I were writing some thank you notes on the plane to pass the time and the steward passed by and asked us if we were getting married. We explained that we had gotten married the day before. He asked our names and congratulated us. He then made an in-flight announcement and everyone gave us a round of applause. Upon landing in Orlando, a bottle of champagne was waiting for us. Even the captain personally congratulated us. As I said, we will be loyal customers.

We landed right about sunset, and it was beautiful. There are a lot more trees and a lot more water than I am used to seeing. It was about a half-hour drive to Canaveral from Orlando, and it was through nothing but trees. We were looking for something to eat, but there was nothing out there. Periodically, we did see cars parked along the side of the road, with their headlights pointing in to the forest…we never did figure out what they were doing!

Today, we are going to hopefully go by the Kennedy Space Center (someone told us a shuttle was up), walk along the beach and see if I like water anymore, and board our cruise. This will probably be the last update until we get back. There is internet on the ship, for a “very reasonable fee”, but I’m not sure that their definition of reasonable and mine are the same thing!

Thanks to all for everything you did for the wedding. It was a wonderful time and it couldn’t have been done without all the support and help we received. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

Small Rant – Microsoft Management Console

Why is the Microsoft Management Console the only program in Windows that DOESN’T show Close as the last option when you right-click it on the task bar? Of all programs, if I’m using the Computer Management snap-in, I probably don’t need “Windows Help”, which is what appears down in the last slot.

I can’t count how many times I’ve right-clicked/left-clicked to close the window and stupid Help shows up.

All My Bags Are Packed

We got everything packed and ready to go. I’m sure we’ll think of more things to add, but the most of it is done.

I cleaned out the spare bedroom closet, which has been filled with wedding related items for the past months. Everything is lined up and ready to go to the church.

Tomorrow, I’ll print the programs and get my car cleaned up, then we have the shower tomorrow night. I can’t wait to see all the people there and spend some time talking to old friends.

Registry errors on boot

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 \CONFIG\SYSTEM

Ironically, I’ve had two friends with the same error on their computer within the past week.

They boot up and get an error that says:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
One time, I couldn’t boot to the Windows XP CD, so I couldn’t get to the Recovery Console.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 tells how to repair the registry (which is what’s damaged.)
From what I’ve read, this can be caused by a process writing to the registry when the computer is shut down. Something gets hung up, you think your comptuer is locked up so you shut it off, and bam — corrupted registry.
This Bart fellow has a wonderful boot CD:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
It uses the WinPE from your XP CD to create a bootable CD that can access the network, give you a command prompt, file manager, checkdisk, etc. This is an ABSOLUTE must for any sysadmin’s CD case of tools.
In both cases, running checkdisk allowed me to boot up to the hard drive, or use the XP CD to get into the recovery console. In both cases, there were bad sectors on the hard drive.

Turns out that \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM errors are fairly common, since I’ve fixed this more and more.

Typically, I use the XP CD to boot into the recovery console, then replace the registry hives to the originals, boot to safe mode, extract the hives from System Restore (four or five back), boot back into the Recovery Console and load the hives to the Restored state.

Whew. Anyway, there’s a Microsoft article detailing this procedure, so go search the KB.

Bridal Pictures and Lists To Be Written

We’re down to the last week. There’s packing to be done, punch to make, friends to greet, and cake to eat. The plan is to be packed by Wednesday so we don’t have to worry about that later!

Jessica went to take some bridal pictures yesterday. Naturally, I can’t see any of them. She had a trial run for her hair and makeup. All was good. Well, so I hear, since I wasn’t there.

There’s the shower on Thursday night. If you’re coming and haven’t RSVP’d, please do so that the wonderful Jan Workman will know that you’re coming.

Lots of little things to get done, so I’m going to make a list. Things always look more manageable when you have a list!

We really appreciate all those people that are showing up early to help get things together and organized and set up, and we really really appreciate those that are going to stay after we get to leave!

I’m off to make some lists and do some packing!
